Il termine osteria viene da 'oste', dall'antico francese oste, ostesse che a sua volta deriva dal latino hospite. Una delle prime attestazioni del termine hostaria si trova nei capitolari della magistratura dei "Signori di Notte", che, come suggerito dal nome, vegliava sulla tranquillità notturna della Venezia del XIII secolo. L'etimologia della denominazione attuale richiama la funzione del luogo che è appunto quella dell'ospitalità.
